Narrative:
Departing ccr in climb to ccr VOR, given clearance to 5000 ft, copilot flying from left seat. Encountered problem with new FMS installation (#1 RMI needle pointing 180 degrees off in FMS mode but still tuned to VOR?) PNF gave 1000 ft to go call but about same time the ccr VOR was crossed. During confusion with RMI (trying to determine position) altitude was overflown by 600 ft (5600 ft). Returned to 5000 ft within 1 min.
