Narrative:
Taxiing out at night, clearance was 'taxi to runway 17 via taxiway C.' it is a short distance to taxi so I was busy with checklist flows and execution. I looked up just as tower said 'it appears you are near runway 17, cleared across to hold short.' we cleared both directions prior to crossing runway 17. There was no traffic either way. It appears that the captain misread the taxi diagram and had runway 17 and runway 23 reversed. The chart is poorly labeled near this intersection, which adds to the confusion. Taxiway B north is labeled in such a way that it appears to be referencing a road which runs near that taxiway on the diagram. From now on, I will make sure my checklist accomplishment does not interfere with my awareness of the situation outside the cockpit.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF AN MLG ACR BECAME DISORIENTED DURING TAXI OUT AT NIGHT AND FAILED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY AS INSTRUCTED IN HIS TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. TWR CTLR INTERVENED AND ISSUED AMENDED TAXI INSTRUCTIONS.
Narrative: TAXIING OUT AT NIGHT, CLRNC WAS 'TAXI TO RWY 17 VIA TXWY C.' IT IS A SHORT DISTANCE TO TAXI SO I WAS BUSY WITH CHKLIST FLOWS AND EXECUTION. I LOOKED UP JUST AS TWR SAID 'IT APPEARS YOU ARE NEAR RWY 17, CLRED ACROSS TO HOLD SHORT.' WE CLRED BOTH DIRECTIONS PRIOR TO XING RWY 17. THERE WAS NO TFC EITHER WAY. IT APPEARS THAT THE CAPT MISREAD THE TAXI DIAGRAM AND HAD RWY 17 AND RWY 23 REVERSED. THE CHART IS POORLY LABELED NEAR THIS INTXN, WHICH ADDS TO THE CONFUSION. TXWY B N IS LABELED IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT APPEARS TO BE REFING A ROAD WHICH RUNS NEAR THAT TXWY ON THE DIAGRAM. FROM NOW ON, I WILL MAKE SURE MY CHKLIST ACCOMPLISHMENT DOES NOT INTERFERE WITH MY AWARENESS OF THE SIT OUTSIDE THE COCKPIT.
