Narrative:
Phx ATCT departed C501 lead aircraft on eagul departure. Approximately 6 mi in trail, they released a B757 on drk departure. Both aircraft assigned 7000 ft. Departures overlay each other for 20 mi from airport. B757 had 80 KT overtake on C501. I reassigned altitude of 6000 ft to B757 to ensure separation. No form of position separation was assigned or coordinated by the tower. It appears that some tower controllers do not understand or take into consideration aircraft performance characteristics.
