Narrative:

Compressor stall and thrust loss on left engine at 7500 ft MSL 190 KIAS, flaps 1 degree. Shut down the left engine, turned to a downwind for runway 16. Accomplished appropriate checklists, declared an emergency and landed on runway 16, overweight (204000 pounds versus 198000 pounds). Captain's emergency authority/authorized was used as immediate landing was deemed the safer course of action versus delaying landing more than 30 mins. Uneventful landing and examination by fire department accomplished. Taxied to gate and emergency was terminated.
