Narrative:
We were taxiing from the terminal to runway 34 via taxiway T1, taxiway C and taxiway K. We were told to hold short of runway 5R/23L. As we made the turn from taxiway C onto K, a jet took off in front of us using runway 23L. After turning onto taxiway K, I looked for the hold short lines on taxiway K. We were looking directly into the morning sun. I saw some hold short lines prior to runway 23L, but after looking at them for a few seconds and getting closer to them, both the captain and I realized that they had been painted over. Just then, pvd ground advised us to hold short of runway 23L, that we had passed the hold short line. I told ground that we were holding short, that we knew that we had passed the hold short line, but the line was very difficult to see taxiing toward the sun. No other comment was made by ground or me.

Title: AN ACR FLC FLYING A B737-800 RPTS ACKNOWLEDGING TO GND CTL AT PVD THAT THEY FAILED TO STOP AT THE HOLD SHORT LINE TO RWY 5R/23L.

JUST THEN, PVD GND ADVISED US TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 23L, THAT WE HAD PASSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE. I TOLD GND THAT WE WERE HOLDING SHORT, THAT WE KNEW THAT WE HAD PASSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE, BUT THE LINE WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE TAXIING TOWARD THE SUN. NO OTHER COMMENT WAS MADE BY GND OR ME.
