Narrative:
We climbed through 4000 ft MSL (assigned altitude) to 4300 ft MSL. Autoplt on with altitude preselect set to 4000 ft MSL, we never captured 4000 ft MSL. Sun was shining on the flight director at the time, making it difficult to see the lighted mode buttons.
