Narrative:
After pushback from gate in sjc, we attempted to start the #1 engine with the right ignition system selected. The engine failed to start. We called sjc maintenance who suggested we attempt to start on the other ignition system. We switched the ignition switch to the left system and the engine started normally. We started the #2 engine with the left system and switched to both prior to departing. Upon further review of the MEL, we determined the ignition requirement for the left and right system are different and we should have returned to the gate.

Title: B737 CREW DEPARTS AFTER HAVING PROB STARTING IGNITION WITHOUT FOLLOWING UP WITH REQUIRED MAINT PROCS.
Narrative: AFTER PUSHBACK FROM GATE IN SJC, WE ATTEMPTED TO START THE #1 ENG WITH THE R IGNITION SYS SELECTED. THE ENG FAILED TO START. WE CALLED SJC MAINT WHO SUGGESTED WE ATTEMPT TO START ON THE OTHER IGNITION SYS. WE SWITCHED THE IGNITION SWITCH TO THE L SYS AND THE ENG STARTED NORMALLY. WE STARTED THE #2 ENG WITH THE L SYS AND SWITCHED TO BOTH PRIOR TO DEPARTING. UPON FURTHER REVIEW OF THE MEL, WE DETERMINED THE IGNITION REQUIREMENT FOR THE L AND R SYS ARE DIFFERENT AND WE SHOULD HAVE RETURNED TO THE GATE.
