Narrative:
Very busy with 5-6 aircraft holding and 3-4 in pattern. We were first for takeoff. Tower called with what PIC and instructor heard as 'taxi into position and hold' instructions. We were having problems with rear engine distracting us. Tower called a second time and requested readback. Read back as 'taxi into position and hold.' crossed the hold line and tower stated that controller wanted us to 'hold short' for aircraft on final. Tower cleared us for immediate takeoff. While the distraction of the engine problem caused some confusion, tower's request for us to 'read back hold instruction' led us to believe that we had been given a different instruction. Tower had given 'taxi into position and hold' instructions to the 3 previous aircraft, so we expected those instructions. While there was no adverse outcome, the potential for an accident was significant. 1 aircraft was cleared with a taxi into position and hold onto the runway before us. The aircraft on final called tower and verified an aircraft on the runway. When confirmed, the aircraft on final was given go around instructions.

Title: A C337 PLT AND CFI PERFORM A RWY INCURSION AT ADS, TX.
Narrative: VERY BUSY WITH 5-6 ACFT HOLDING AND 3-4 IN PATTERN. WE WERE FIRST FOR TKOF. TWR CALLED WITH WHAT PIC AND INSTRUCTOR HEARD AS 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD' INSTRUCTIONS. WE WERE HAVING PROBS WITH REAR ENG DISTRACTING US. TWR CALLED A SECOND TIME AND REQUESTED READBACK. READ BACK AS 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD.' CROSSED THE HOLD LINE AND TWR STATED THAT CTLR WANTED US TO 'HOLD SHORT' FOR ACFT ON FINAL. TWR CLRED US FOR IMMEDIATE TKOF. WHILE THE DISTR OF THE ENG PROB CAUSED SOME CONFUSION, TWR'S REQUEST FOR US TO 'READ BACK HOLD INSTRUCTION' LED US TO BELIEVE THAT WE HAD BEEN GIVEN A DIFFERENT INSTRUCTION. TWR HAD GIVEN 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD' INSTRUCTIONS TO THE 3 PREVIOUS ACFT, SO WE EXPECTED THOSE INSTRUCTIONS. WHILE THERE WAS NO ADVERSE OUTCOME, THE POTENTIAL FOR AN ACCIDENT WAS SIGNIFICANT. 1 ACFT WAS CLRED WITH A TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD ONTO THE RWY BEFORE US. THE ACFT ON FINAL CALLED TWR AND VERIFIED AN ACFT ON THE RWY. WHEN CONFIRMED, THE ACFT ON FINAL WAS GIVEN GAR INSTRUCTIONS.
