Narrative:
Approaching santa monica with clearance to 7000 ft. ATC cleared us to maintain 7000 ft until crossing VOR then descend to 2500 ft. First officer flying. First officer reset 2500 on fcp calculating that he wouldn't get down to 7000 ft prior to the VOR. I reset 7000 ft and explained that I would rather do it that way because it is procedure. Leveling at 7000 ft with 2.7 mi to go first officer pressed IAS button and continued descent crossing santa monica at 6200 ft. Short of taking abrupt physical control of the airplane, I could not stop him. Not enough first officer's follow their captain's lead. I don't want to create an oppressive environment in the cockpit, but an erosion of respect has created an erosion of safety.

Title: ACR CAPT COMPLAINS THAT FO WILL NOT FLY AS DIRECTED AFTER THE FO LEAVES ASSIGNED ALT OVER SMO.
Narrative: APCHING SANTA MONICA WITH CLRNC TO 7000 FT. ATC CLRED US TO MAINTAIN 7000 FT UNTIL XING VOR THEN DSND TO 2500 FT. FO FLYING. FO RESET 2500 ON FCP CALCULATING THAT HE WOULDN'T GET DOWN TO 7000 FT PRIOR TO THE VOR. I RESET 7000 FT AND EXPLAINED THAT I WOULD RATHER DO IT THAT WAY BECAUSE IT IS PROC. LEVELING AT 7000 FT WITH 2.7 MI TO GO FO PRESSED IAS BUTTON AND CONTINUED DSCNT XING SANTA MONICA AT 6200 FT. SHORT OF TAKING ABRUPT PHYSICAL CTL OF THE AIRPLANE, I COULD NOT STOP HIM. NOT ENOUGH FO'S FOLLOW THEIR CAPT'S LEAD. I DON'T WANT TO CREATE AN OPPRESSIVE ENVIRONMENT IN THE COCKPIT, BUT AN EROSION OF RESPECT HAS CREATED AN EROSION OF SAFETY.
