Narrative:
After vectors out of seatac airport, at 8000 ft, was given new clearance 'direct lofal, direct.' asked to clarify. Sea approach confirmed clearance, 'direct lofal, direct clm, if it's ok with you.' I was in VMC, had terrain in sight, had airport area in sight. I responded, 'it's ok with me.' after I was switched to whidbey approach, whidbey advised me that I was headed for area with MVA of 9500 ft. I was given a northwest heading to avoid entry into area with MVA 9500 ft. On question 'who gave me that heading?' I answered that sea departure cleared me direct lofal, direct clm. Landed in clm without any further problems. During all this time, I was in VMC, had terrain in sight, had airport (clm) area in sight. Never entered area with MVA 9500 ft. Flight was uneventful. After landing, I talked on the phone with whidbey approach. Whidbey approach said that he did not expect my turn direct clm after lofal and there was another air carrier in the area also. I also talked to sea approach. They said that they realized it was their mistake, and they did not have anything against me. Apparently, sea departure cleared me direct through whidbey's airspace without advising whidbey approach about the change in routing and without knowing that there is an area with MVA 9500 ft (above my 8000 ft).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A DASH 8 FLC GETS AN IMPROPER DIRECT CLRNC FROM S46 CTLR THAT VIOLATED THE MVA W OF SEA, WA.
Narrative: AFTER VECTORS OUT OF SEATAC ARPT, AT 8000 FT, WAS GIVEN NEW CLRNC 'DIRECT LOFAL, DIRECT.' ASKED TO CLARIFY. SEA APCH CONFIRMED CLRNC, 'DIRECT LOFAL, DIRECT CLM, IF IT'S OK WITH YOU.' I WAS IN VMC, HAD TERRAIN IN SIGHT, HAD ARPT AREA IN SIGHT. I RESPONDED, 'IT'S OK WITH ME.' AFTER I WAS SWITCHED TO WHIDBEY APCH, WHIDBEY ADVISED ME THAT I WAS HEADED FOR AREA WITH MVA OF 9500 FT. I WAS GIVEN A NW HDG TO AVOID ENTRY INTO AREA WITH MVA 9500 FT. ON QUESTION 'WHO GAVE ME THAT HDG?' I ANSWERED THAT SEA DEP CLRED ME DIRECT LOFAL, DIRECT CLM. LANDED IN CLM WITHOUT ANY FURTHER PROBS. DURING ALL THIS TIME, I WAS IN VMC, HAD TERRAIN IN SIGHT, HAD ARPT (CLM) AREA IN SIGHT. NEVER ENTERED AREA WITH MVA 9500 FT. FLT WAS UNEVENTFUL. AFTER LNDG, I TALKED ON THE PHONE WITH WHIDBEY APCH. WHIDBEY APCH SAID THAT HE DID NOT EXPECT MY TURN DIRECT CLM AFTER LOFAL AND THERE WAS ANOTHER ACR IN THE AREA ALSO. I ALSO TALKED TO SEA APCH. THEY SAID THAT THEY REALIZED IT WAS THEIR MISTAKE, AND THEY DID NOT HAVE ANYTHING AGAINST ME. APPARENTLY, SEA DEP CLRED ME DIRECT THROUGH WHIDBEY'S AIRSPACE WITHOUT ADVISING WHIDBEY APCH ABOUT THE CHANGE IN ROUTING AND WITHOUT KNOWING THAT THERE IS AN AREA WITH MVA 9500 FT (ABOVE MY 8000 FT).
