Narrative:
Climbing out of dca in A320 aircraft, I was conducting last day of IOE for new crew. We do 'crew' IOE where captain/first officer situation in seats with check pilot in the jump seat. All was normal, cleared to climb to 17000 ft. Controller amended clearance to 16000 ft. A320 is a fast clber and we went through 16000 ft to 16400 ft before leveling at 16000 ft. Crew should have advised ATC.
