Narrative:
Fuel gauge malfunction. Relatively inexperienced first officer's fuel reasonableness check, and the captain not checking his work closely enough did not identify the fuel gauge malfunction. The gauge malfunction caused us to fly with a fuel imbal. Captain and first officer thoroughly discussed reasonableness check and both completely understand the procedure. Situation should not recur to either crew member.
