Narrative:
Jan/mon/00 departing mdw to lax on frequency 133.5 at 4000 ft, we understood ATC to clear us to 7000 ft, which was set in altitude alert. At approximately 5900 ft, we queried ATC to confirm 7000 ft and was told that we were cleared to 6000 ft. Climb was arrested at 6300 ft and immediate return to 6000 ft accomplished. Proceeded on to lax uneventfully.
