Narrative:
On after takeoff climb, while approaching 10000 ft, the tailskid light illuminated. When level at 10000 ft, the flight engineer informed the captain of the tailskid light, and at that instant we were cleared to climb to 15000 ft, at which time during the setting of climb power we observed 280 KTS and immediately reduced to 250 KTS as per the LG9 departure and ATC. The light and the clearance to climb came at very close intervals, and a panel scan along with the ATC clearance and speed reminder helped us make the adjustment. Correction: situational awareness and attention to detail.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CLBING B727-200 FERRY FLT EXCEEDS THE ASSIGNED SPD OF 250 KTS AFTER CREW NOTES A TAILSKID LIGHT ON WHILE CLBING OUT OF 10000 FT, 25 MI NW OF LGA, NY.
Narrative: ON AFTER TKOF CLB, WHILE APCHING 10000 FT, THE TAILSKID LIGHT ILLUMINATED. WHEN LEVEL AT 10000 FT, THE FE INFORMED THE CAPT OF THE TAILSKID LIGHT, AND AT THAT INSTANT WE WERE CLRED TO CLB TO 15000 FT, AT WHICH TIME DURING THE SETTING OF CLB PWR WE OBSERVED 280 KTS AND IMMEDIATELY REDUCED TO 250 KTS AS PER THE LG9 DEP AND ATC. THE LIGHT AND THE CLRNC TO CLB CAME AT VERY CLOSE INTERVALS, AND A PANEL SCAN ALONG WITH THE ATC CLRNC AND SPD REMINDER HELPED US MAKE THE ADJUSTMENT. CORRECTION: SITUATIONAL AWARENESS AND ATTN TO DETAIL.
