Narrative:
While on the rbv arrival to ewr, we were cleared to cross holey intersection at 11000 ft. In an ill advised attempt to keep the 'ice' lights out and give a good ride, I allowed myself to get behind the curve and there was no way I could make the crossing clearance. I said nothing until I was only 2 mi from the fix and only when ATC asked if I was going to make it -- said no -- I needed relief. ZDC said ok, cross rbv at 8000 ft and said ok, but even that was near impossible. We changed frequencys and approach gave us a heading and altitude which I considered relief. The whole thing was poor execution, planning, and management on my part. This won't happen again, but I'm embarrassed that I didn't even heed my own initial briefing that I 'would rather be 10 mi early than 1/10 mi late.'
