Narrative:

Failed to fly V378 outbound from mxe. Had been given several vectors inbound to mxe. Then cleared direct mxe and as filed. PNF was off for communications with company. PF used heading select to turn to mxe, then failed to engage LNAV after turn completed. No traffic conflict was apparent to us. ATC gave us a turn to intercept V378 outbound from mxe.
