Narrative:
While working with sat RAPCON approximately AB38Z and at 6000 ft, we were instructed to proceed direct to alamo. We turned to follow the ADF needle and soon realized the needle was not providing proper guidance even though the frequency had been properly idented and tuned by both pilots. After seeing us turn the wrong way, RAPCON began questioning us and assumed we had ignored their instructions and had instead turned to a heading of 290 degrees as had previously been directed. We were then vectored to final approach course and a normal approach was conducted. We had the ADF receiver replaced while at sat and the equipment appeared to operate normally after that. I believe RAPCON thinks we were intentionally ignoring their instructions while actually we were caught by a malfunctioning piece of navigation equipment.

Title: AN MD80S CAPT RPTED AN ADF PROB WHICH CAUSED THE CREW TO TURN IN THE WRONG DIRECTION AND WORRIED THAT THIS MAY HAVE BEEN MISPERCEIVED BY SAT AS AN INTENTIONAL DISREGARDING OF THEIR INSTRUCTIONS.
Narrative: WHILE WORKING WITH SAT RAPCON APPROX AB38Z AND AT 6000 FT, WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO PROCEED DIRECT TO ALAMO.
