Narrative:
During climb out from troy, al (toi), to sarasota, fl (srq), was told by ZTL to maintain 16000 ft for traffic. Center then told me to call when traffic was in sight. Traffic was reported in sight and center told me to keep the traffic in sight and cleared me to climb to FL190. After beginning climb, I realized that I had misjudged the angle of closure and started a right turn to increase distance from the traffic, and to pass behind traffic. Center told me that it was too close for comfort. I estimate I passed approximately 1000-1500 ft behind and 500 ft above the traffic. I should not have accepted the climb clearance nor do I think center should have issued the clearance.

Title: PLT OF A PIPER CHEYENNE, PAY2, TURNED DURING CLB TO CRUISE ALT IN ORDER TO ASSURE SPACING WITH TFC FOR WHICH ARTCC CTLR REQUESTED THAT HE MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION.
Narrative: DURING CLBOUT FROM TROY, AL (TOI), TO SARASOTA, FL (SRQ), WAS TOLD BY ZTL TO MAINTAIN 16000 FT FOR TFC. CTR THEN TOLD ME TO CALL WHEN TFC WAS IN SIGHT. TFC WAS RPTED IN SIGHT AND CTR TOLD ME TO KEEP THE TFC IN SIGHT AND CLRED ME TO CLB TO FL190. AFTER BEGINNING CLB, I REALIZED THAT I HAD MISJUDGED THE ANGLE OF CLOSURE AND STARTED A R TURN TO INCREASE DISTANCE FROM THE TFC, AND TO PASS BEHIND TFC. CTR TOLD ME THAT IT WAS TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT. I ESTIMATE I PASSED APPROX 1000-1500 FT BEHIND AND 500 FT ABOVE THE TFC. I SHOULD NOT HAVE ACCEPTED THE CLB CLRNC NOR DO I THINK CTR SHOULD HAVE ISSUED THE CLRNC.
