Narrative:
During landing rollout in a crosswind condition (approximately 8 KT crosswind component), student did not compensate for crosswind gust. Plane rolled off runway onto grass while still traveling at 40-50 KTS. I applied full power, full opposite rudder, and raised flaps from 30 degrees to 20 degrees. After a few seconds, plane began climbing again. I was less than closely monitoring landing because of this student's previous skill at crosswind landing. Next time I will not assume they always will recover and I will not allow them to get so far before I intervene.

Title: A STUDENT PLT LOSES CTL OF HIS C172 AND GOES OFF THE RWY. THE INSTRUCTOR PLT FINALLY ASSUMES CTL OF THE ACFT AND PERFORMS A GAR AT S50, WA.
Narrative: DURING LNDG ROLLOUT IN A XWIND CONDITION (APPROX 8 KT XWIND COMPONENT), STUDENT DID NOT COMPENSATE FOR XWIND GUST. PLANE ROLLED OFF RWY ONTO GRASS WHILE STILL TRAVELING AT 40-50 KTS. I APPLIED FULL PWR, FULL OPPOSITE RUDDER, AND RAISED FLAPS FROM 30 DEGS TO 20 DEGS. AFTER A FEW SECONDS, PLANE BEGAN CLBING AGAIN. I WAS LESS THAN CLOSELY MONITORING LNDG BECAUSE OF THIS STUDENT'S PREVIOUS SKILL AT XWIND LNDG. NEXT TIME I WILL NOT ASSUME THEY ALWAYS WILL RECOVER AND I WILL NOT ALLOW THEM TO GET SO FAR BEFORE I INTERVENE.
