Narrative:
While cruising at 16000 ft MSL, ATC advised, what we thought was for us, to descend to 12000 ft MSL. We responded with our flight number to descend and maintain 12000 ft. There was no correction from ATC. Upon reaching approximately 15700 ft MSL, ATC advised us to maintain 16000 ft. We verified that we were to maintain 16000 ft not 12000 ft, and he responded that the descent was not for us. So we immediately corrected for the misunderstanding, and then he said that the descent we initiated was no problem, and that we could now descend at our discretion to maintain 12000 ft MSL.
