Narrative:
Aircraft was en route from dca to atl. Climbing out at approximately FL210, ZDC gave us a vector for a heading of 250 degrees. The first officer set the altitude to FL250 instead of setting the heading to 250 degrees. We were cleared to FL230 at the time of the vector. I did not confirm the altitude change with the first officer, but did respond to center to the vector of a heading of 250 degrees. We continued to climb out and at about FL240 center asked us our altitude. I looked up and responded that we were climbing out of FL240 for FL250. Center then told us we were cleared only to FL230. Center then told us to continue our climb to FL270 at that time. At the time of the vector from ZDC, I was reviewing the aircraft logbook. There had been a problem with the hydraulic system on this aircraft, and I was distraction by looking at the logbook and did not catch the setting the altitude instead of the heading. Supplemental information from ACN471250: we read back climb to FL250.

Title: ACR SETS ALT INSTEAD OF HDG WHEN NEW CLRNC IS RECEIVED. ALT EXCURSION AND TRACK DEV RESULT.
Narrative: ACFT WAS ENRTE FROM DCA TO ATL. CLBING OUT AT APPROX FL210, ZDC GAVE US A VECTOR FOR A HDG OF 250 DEGS. THE FO SET THE ALT TO FL250 INSTEAD OF SETTING THE HDG TO 250 DEGS. WE WERE CLRED TO FL230 AT THE TIME OF THE VECTOR. I DID NOT CONFIRM THE ALT CHANGE WITH THE FO, BUT DID RESPOND TO CTR TO THE VECTOR OF A HDG OF 250 DEGS. WE CONTINUED TO CLB OUT AND AT ABOUT FL240 CTR ASKED US OUR ALT. I LOOKED UP AND RESPONDED THAT WE WERE CLBING OUT OF FL240 FOR FL250. CTR THEN TOLD US WE WERE CLRED ONLY TO FL230. CTR THEN TOLD US TO CONTINUE OUR CLB TO FL270 AT THAT TIME. AT THE TIME OF THE VECTOR FROM ZDC, I WAS REVIEWING THE ACFT LOGBOOK. THERE HAD BEEN A PROB WITH THE HYD SYS ON THIS ACFT, AND I WAS DISTR BY LOOKING AT THE LOGBOOK AND DID NOT CATCH THE SETTING THE ALT INSTEAD OF THE HDG. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN471250: WE READ BACK CLB TO FL250.
