Narrative:
On takeoff we heard another aircraft on tower frequency report that the aircraft that just took off lost a wheel. We had just taken off and were pretty sure it was us, even though we had not yet been officially idented by tower as the aircraft in question. We had already raised the gear and had an EICAS message that stated simply 'antiskid' with 2 status messages of alternate and normal antiskid inoperative. Asked for a holding pattern out over the water to preclude anything from falling off the airplane over the city. We burned down fuel to a gross weight of 275 KTS and landed on the longest available runway, runway 13R at jfk. Turned off and had aircraft inspected prior to taxiing to gate. Maintenance assured me, while in air, that aircraft could be taxied with wheel missing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B767 FLT LOSES 1 WHEEL ON TKOF AND RETURNS LANDS AT JFK, NY.
Narrative: ON TKOF WE HEARD ANOTHER ACFT ON TWR FREQ RPT THAT THE ACFT THAT JUST TOOK OFF LOST A WHEEL. WE HAD JUST TAKEN OFF AND WERE PRETTY SURE IT WAS US, EVEN THOUGH WE HAD NOT YET BEEN OFFICIALLY IDENTED BY TWR AS THE ACFT IN QUESTION. WE HAD ALREADY RAISED THE GEAR AND HAD AN EICAS MESSAGE THAT STATED SIMPLY 'ANTISKID' WITH 2 STATUS MESSAGES OF ALTERNATE AND NORMAL ANTISKID INOP. ASKED FOR A HOLDING PATTERN OUT OVER THE WATER TO PRECLUDE ANYTHING FROM FALLING OFF THE AIRPLANE OVER THE CITY. WE BURNED DOWN FUEL TO A GROSS WT OF 275 KTS AND LANDED ON THE LONGEST AVAILABLE RWY, RWY 13R AT JFK. TURNED OFF AND HAD ACFT INSPECTED PRIOR TO TAXIING TO GATE. MAINT ASSURED ME, WHILE IN AIR, THAT ACFT COULD BE TAXIED WITH WHEEL MISSING.
