Narrative:
ATC facility: ZAU at pivot intersection. Location: pivot intersection near ord. We were given last min holding instructions on a clear day arriving ord. Had the relief pilot call dispatch to beg for relief because we had little fuel to delay. First officer was flying and set up the hold while I calculated fuel available and communicated with ATC. First officer entered the radial/turn direction in the wrong line. He entered it as inbound course and turn. We, of course, held in the mirror image of the actual clearance. As we crossed the fix after 1 turn, I noticed the error -- so did the controller who vectored us around 1 more hold before a clearance to ord was given. Problem was simply an unexpected occurrence with 1 person doing a task without sufficient backup because we were all busy at the same time at the end of an international trip.
