Narrative:
After landing at ogg runway 2 and taxiing off the runway, we were given instructions to 'taxi to parking, hold short of runway 5.' I misunderstood that we were cleared to cross runway 5. Upon approaching intersection of runway 5 and hold short lines, I looked to the right and saw a small cessna at the departure end of runway 5 and stopped abruptly. At the same time my copilot reminded me to 'hold short. Almost immediately after that, tower came on and asked if we were indeed holding short of runway 5, to which we responded affirmative. Tower then asked if we had crossed the hold short line and we responded honestly that 'yes, it appears our nose has just crossed the line.' tower then gave us instructions to call them on the phone when we got to the gate, which we did and got an answering machine with instructions to call back the following day. Cessna traffic on runway 5 departed normally without incident and we proceeded to gate after being cleared to cross runway 5. This incident could have been avoided entirely if there was better communication between all parties involved. However, looking both ways before crossing prevented any potential ground incursion. Finally, traffic at the intersection of taxiway a and runway 5 cannot see the departure end of runway 5 until after slightly crossing the hold short line due to trees and brush obscuring it. It is my opinion that these trees and brush should be removed so that any traffic sitting at the departure end of runway 5 can be easily seen. Also, the words 'taxi to parking' 'hold short,' in my opinion, should not be uttered in the same sentence. Supplemental information from acn 474650: after landing at kahului, maui, on runway 2, I (the first officer) called for taxi clearance to parking. We were instructed to 'taxi to park hold short of runway 5.' I read back our clearance, looked at the captain. Who gave me a nod, then was told 'after landing checklist' by the captain. After completing the checklist I looked forward and noticed that we were not slowing for the hold short line. I told the captain 'hold short stop, stop, stop.' when the aircraft finally stopped, our aircraft nose landing gear was across the hold line. We were instructed to call the tower which was done at the gate, however, no one answered so the captain left a message on the phone recorder. While discussing our scenario between the captain and myself, we found that there was miscom with our taxi clearance. The captain heard the 'taxi to park' instructions but was unaware of the hold short of runway 5 command. I, being a new first officer in the aircraft, was distraction of the clearance by the after landing checklist. I mistook the captain's nod of the head to be confirmation of the entire clearance.

Title: DC9 CREW HAD RWY INCURSION AT OGG.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG AT OGG RWY 2 AND TAXIING OFF THE RWY, WE WERE GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS TO 'TAXI TO PARKING, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 5.' I MISUNDERSTOOD THAT WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS RWY 5. UPON APCHING INTXN OF RWY 5 AND HOLD SHORT LINES, I LOOKED TO THE R AND SAW A SMALL CESSNA AT THE DEP END OF RWY 5 AND STOPPED ABRUPTLY. AT THE SAME TIME MY COPLT REMINDED ME TO 'HOLD SHORT. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY AFTER THAT, TWR CAME ON AND ASKED IF WE WERE INDEED HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 5, TO WHICH WE RESPONDED AFFIRMATIVE. TWR THEN ASKED IF WE HAD CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND WE RESPONDED HONESTLY THAT 'YES, IT APPEARS OUR NOSE HAS JUST CROSSED THE LINE.' TWR THEN GAVE US INSTRUCTIONS TO CALL THEM ON THE PHONE WHEN WE GOT TO THE GATE, WHICH WE DID AND GOT AN ANSWERING MACHINE WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO CALL BACK THE FOLLOWING DAY. CESSNA TFC ON RWY 5 DEPARTED NORMALLY WITHOUT INCIDENT AND WE PROCEEDED TO GATE AFTER BEING CLRED TO CROSS RWY 5. THIS INCIDENT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED ENTIRELY IF THERE WAS BETTER COM BTWN ALL PARTIES INVOLVED. HOWEVER, LOOKING BOTH WAYS BEFORE XING PREVENTED ANY POTENTIAL GND INCURSION. FINALLY, TFC AT THE INTXN OF TXWY A AND RWY 5 CANNOT SEE THE DEP END OF RWY 5 UNTIL AFTER SLIGHTLY XING THE HOLD SHORT LINE DUE TO TREES AND BRUSH OBSCURING IT. IT IS MY OPINION THAT THESE TREES AND BRUSH SHOULD BE REMOVED SO THAT ANY TFC SITTING AT THE DEP END OF RWY 5 CAN BE EASILY SEEN. ALSO, THE WORDS 'TAXI TO PARKING' 'HOLD SHORT,' IN MY OPINION, SHOULD NOT BE UTTERED IN THE SAME SENTENCE. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 474650: AFTER LNDG AT KAHULUI, MAUI, ON RWY 2, I (THE FO) CALLED FOR TAXI CLRNC TO PARKING. WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO 'TAXI TO PARK HOLD SHORT OF RWY 5.' I READ BACK OUR CLRNC, LOOKED AT THE CAPT. WHO GAVE ME A NOD, THEN WAS TOLD 'AFTER LNDG CHKLIST' BY THE CAPT. AFTER COMPLETING THE CHKLIST I LOOKED FORWARD AND NOTICED THAT WE WERE NOT SLOWING FOR THE HOLD SHORT LINE. I TOLD THE CAPT 'HOLD SHORT STOP, STOP, STOP.' WHEN THE ACFT FINALLY STOPPED, OUR ACFT NOSE LNDG GEAR WAS ACROSS THE HOLD LINE. WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO CALL THE TWR WHICH WAS DONE AT THE GATE, HOWEVER, NO ONE ANSWERED SO THE CAPT LEFT A MESSAGE ON THE PHONE RECORDER. WHILE DISCUSSING OUR SCENARIO BTWN THE CAPT AND MYSELF, WE FOUND THAT THERE WAS MISCOM WITH OUR TAXI CLRNC. THE CAPT HEARD THE 'TAXI TO PARK' INSTRUCTIONS BUT WAS UNAWARE OF THE HOLD SHORT OF RWY 5 COMMAND. I, BEING A NEW FO IN THE ACFT, WAS DISTR OF THE CLRNC BY THE AFTER LNDG CHKLIST. I MISTOOK THE CAPT'S NOD OF THE HEAD TO BE CONFIRMATION OF THE ENTIRE CLRNC.
