Narrative:
While taxiing for departure at stl airport, the taxi clearance was misunderstood. The taxi clearance given was 'taxi via taxiway north, taxiway P, hold short of runway 30R. We thought that meant that we were cleared on both taxiway north and taxiway P all the way to the approach end of runway 30R. We realized our error only after being told to stop by ground control. If the clearance had been, taxiway north, taxiway P, hold short of runway 30R at taxiway north, this very likely could have been avoided.

Title: DC9 HAD RWY INCURSION AT STL.
Narrative: WHILE TAXIING FOR DEP AT STL ARPT, THE TAXI CLRNC WAS MISUNDERSTOOD. THE TAXI CLRNC GIVEN WAS 'TAXI VIA TXWY N, TXWY P, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 30R. WE THOUGHT THAT MEANT THAT WE WERE CLRED ON BOTH TXWY N AND TXWY P ALL THE WAY TO THE APCH END OF RWY 30R. WE REALIZED OUR ERROR ONLY AFTER BEING TOLD TO STOP BY GND CTL. IF THE CLRNC HAD BEEN, TXWY N, TXWY P, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 30R AT TXWY N, THIS VERY LIKELY COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED.
