Narrative:
Aircraft had a normal descent for landing and was lined up on the runway centerline. Just as aircraft was to touch down, its direction changed so runout would take if off the runway. An aborted landing was initiated (go around). In attempting to regain directional control, the plane drifted off the runway and the plane struck a small cactus damaging the leading edge of the right horizontal stabilizer. It's possible an unseen dust devil may have hit the plane at touchdown or just prior to touchdown.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF A C206 LOST DIRECTIONAL CTL DURING LNDG RESULTING IN RUNNING OFF THE SIDE OF THE RWY AND CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE R HORIZ STABILIZER.
Narrative: ACFT HAD A NORMAL DSCNT FOR LNDG AND WAS LINED UP ON THE RWY CTRLINE. JUST AS ACFT WAS TO TOUCH DOWN, ITS DIRECTION CHANGED SO RUNOUT WOULD TAKE IF OFF THE RWY. AN ABORTED LNDG WAS INITIATED (GAR). IN ATTEMPTING TO REGAIN DIRECTIONAL CTL, THE PLANE DRIFTED OFF THE RWY AND THE PLANE STRUCK A SMALL CACTUS DAMAGING THE LEADING EDGE OF THE R HORIZ STABILIZER. IT'S POSSIBLE AN UNSEEN DUST DEVIL MAY HAVE HIT THE PLANE AT TOUCHDOWN OR JUST PRIOR TO TOUCHDOWN.
