Narrative:
I turned 10 mi due north of the airport (sundance) for a straight-in approach. I had monitored ATIS of a nearby airport and knew all relevant WX factors. I switched fuel tanks after my turn. I started my descent to pattern altitude. I notified airport traffic of my intentions immediately after my turn in (10 mi). I continued to talk to and monitor traffic. Traffic was very light and I heard no communications from other traffic. At about 7 mi. I developed a loss of power. I radioed a mayday and went through an abbreviated emergency engine restart. Due to my altitude, I started searching for a place to set down. I was losing altitude quickly so I set down in a wheat field 4 mi north of the airport. During this period, I was also in contact with sundance unicom who heard my mayday.
