Narrative:
Descending to cross lamma at 12000 ft. I looked away from altimeter to adjust heading. I had called 'out of 13000 ft for 12000 ft, a thousand to go.' when I looked back the altimeter was at 11800 ft and descending. The autoplt had not stopped at 12000 ft. I hit 'altitude hold' twice -- it didn't stop. I switched off the autoplt and stopped the descent at approximately 11500 ft. On the next leg the autoplt continued through 11000 ft on a descent and caught immediately. We wrote it up at the end of that leg. Looking away from the instruments by having to look at the glareshield area is bad. Too much automation.

Narrative: DSNDING TO CROSS LAMMA AT 12000 FT. I LOOKED AWAY FROM ALTIMETER TO ADJUST HEADING. I HAD CALLED 'OUT OF 13000 FT FOR 12000 FT, A THOUSAND TO GO.' WHEN I LOOKED BACK THE ALTIMETER WAS AT 11800 FT AND DSNDING. THE AUTOPLT HAD NOT STOPPED AT 12000 FT. I HIT 'ALT HOLD' TWICE -- IT DIDN'T STOP. I SWITCHED OFF THE AUTOPLT AND STOPPED THE DSCNT AT APPROX 11500 FT. ON THE NEXT LEG THE AUTOPLT CONTINUED THROUGH 11000 FT ON A DSCNT AND CAUGHT IMMEDIATELY. WE WROTE IT UP AT THE END OF THAT LEG. LOOKING AWAY FROM THE INSTS BY HAVING TO LOOK AT THE GLARESHIELD AREA IS BAD. TOO MUCH AUTOMATION.
