Narrative:
At approximately XA00 over the small town of herron, mi, an emergency landing was required due to fuel loss in a C172. The cause of the problem is unknown. Contributing factors may have been malfunctioning equipment, fuel tank integrity, miscalculations, improper planning, or fuel cap security. The problem was discovered when the engine stopped running. The only possible corrective action was to land the plane in an OAT field off of wolf creek road, 8 mi southeast of apn, return with more gas, and fly the aircraft out of the field and back to apn. Occurrence was when returning from riverview (O8C) on a cross country. Hobbs time: 3.2, fuel capacity: 38 gallons. Poor judgement on assuming this 180-horse power plane could fly for the extended period attempted. Positive decision making and field selection. Possible factors affecting performance are get homeitis, fatigue, and pride.
