Narrative:
Given taxi clearance to runway 12 and told to hold short of runway 20. I read back the clearance to the ground controller. I was about 200 yards from runway 20 hold line and I called the tower frequency that I was ready for departure. He told me again to hold short of runway 20 and I again read back the clearance. Unfortunately, I must have left my brain in neutral because I taxied across the runway 20 hold line to hold short of runway 12. This caught the notice of the tower controller. He told me to taxi on the runway and then leave at the next taxiway to hold again at runway 20. Runway 20 hold short line also doubles for the ILS critical area. ATC protects the ILS critical area when WX is below 800 ft or 2 mi visibility. Unfortunately, my mindset was to hold short of runway 12. I should have paid more attention to the controller. This was an inadvertent mistake with undesirable consequences, especially if this had occurred at a more busy facility. More diligence on my part should have been exercised on this day and in the future.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: THE CAPT OF A METROLINER, TAXIING AT SMX, BECAME CONFUSED BY THE HOLD SHORT LINES AT THE INTERSECTING RWYS OF 20-02 AND 12-30.
Narrative: GIVEN TAXI CLRNC TO RWY 12 AND TOLD TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 20. I READ BACK THE CLRNC TO THE GND CTLR. I WAS ABOUT 200 YARDS FROM RWY 20 HOLD LINE AND I CALLED THE TWR FREQ THAT I WAS READY FOR DEP. HE TOLD ME AGAIN TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 20 AND I AGAIN READ BACK THE CLRNC. UNFORTUNATELY, I MUST HAVE LEFT MY BRAIN IN NEUTRAL BECAUSE I TAXIED ACROSS THE RWY 20 HOLD LINE TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 12. THIS CAUGHT THE NOTICE OF THE TWR CTLR. HE TOLD ME TO TAXI ON THE RWY AND THEN LEAVE AT THE NEXT TXWY TO HOLD AGAIN AT RWY 20. RWY 20 HOLD SHORT LINE ALSO DOUBLES FOR THE ILS CRITICAL AREA. ATC PROTECTS THE ILS CRITICAL AREA WHEN WX IS BELOW 800 FT OR 2 MI VISIBILITY. UNFORTUNATELY, MY MINDSET WAS TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 12. I SHOULD HAVE PAID MORE ATTN TO THE CTLR.
