Narrative:

Shortly after takeoff, the flight engineer remarked #2 engine was hot. I glanced down to see #2 egt overtemp light on egt on. We finished cleaning up the aircraft and noted the #2 egt overtemp indicator showed off scale high. All other indications from #2 were normal. N1, N2, and ff were normal and never showed a rise like the egt showed. After consulting the manual, we determined the correct action would be to return to hnl and have the problem checked by maintenance before crossing the ocean for dfw. Fuel was dumped, approximately 50000 pounds. Weight was reduced to 415000 pounds by landing. After the landing was assured, the #2 engine was shut down. Hnl maintenance replaced the #2 egt indicator and thermocouple and the thermocouple wiring. My flight crew performed an engine runup up to and including takeoff power on the #2 engine after taxiing to runway 8R as per instructions hnl ground control. We returned to the gate. The passenger were reboarded and the flight was completed to dfw with no further incident.

Narrative: SHORTLY AFTER TKOF, THE FE REMARKED #2 ENG WAS HOT. I GLANCED DOWN TO SEE #2 EGT OVERTEMP LIGHT ON EGT ON. WE FINISHED CLEANING UP THE ACFT AND NOTED THE #2 EGT OVERTEMP INDICATOR SHOWED OFF SCALE HIGH. ALL OTHER INDICATIONS FROM #2 WERE NORMAL. N1, N2, AND FF WERE NORMAL AND NEVER SHOWED A RISE LIKE THE EGT SHOWED. WT WAS REDUCED TO 415000 LBS BY LNDG. AFTER THE LNDG WAS ASSURED, THE #2 ENG WAS SHUT DOWN. HNL MAINT REPLACED THE #2 EGT INDICATOR AND THERMOCOUPLE AND THE THERMOCOUPLE WIRING. MY FLC PERFORMED AN ENG RUNUP UP TO AND INCLUDING TKOF PWR ON THE #2 ENG AFTER TAXIING TO RWY 8R AS PER INSTRUCTIONS HNL GND CTL. WE RETURNED TO THE GATE. THE PAX WERE REBOARDED AND THE FLT WAS COMPLETED TO DFW WITH NO FURTHER INCIDENT.
