Narrative:
Far 135 charter flight on IFR flight plan. Route of flight cleared direct harnl, jxn V221, fwa, direct destination. The PF programmed GPS, kln-90B harwl, fwa, direct, with navigation mode enabled, autoplt engaged. After reaching harwl (dxo R281/37 DME) the aircraft turned to heading 240 degrees direct fwa. About this time the PNF pilot detected the navigation error and directed a turn to a heading of 290 degrees. ZOB asked if we were proceeding to jxn. The estimated navigation error was 7-8 NM ssw of track. No conflict occurred with other IFR traffic. The causal factor in this navigation deviation was the inappropriate use of navigation mode with autoflt engaged, GPS. Total flight time planned less than .8 hours. Backing up the GPS using raw data, in this case VOR tuned, HSI, and proper RMI prevented a gross navigation error. Had the PNF not been backing up the GPS or xchking the aircraft heading/position, the aircraft would have continued direct fwa. Once again improper use of FMS/GPS/autoflt got the best of the humans!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A POTENTIAL NAV ERROR IS AVOIDED BY AN ALERT FO ON A BE300 SUPER KING AIR CHARTER FLT ALTERING COURSE AND PROCEEDING DIRECT TOWARDS FWA, IN.
Narrative: FAR 135 CHARTER FLT ON IFR FLT PLAN. RTE OF FLT CLRED DIRECT HARNL, JXN V221, FWA, DIRECT DEST. THE PF PROGRAMMED GPS, KLN-90B HARWL, FWA, DIRECT, WITH NAV MODE ENABLED, AUTOPLT ENGAGED. AFTER REACHING HARWL (DXO R281/37 DME) THE ACFT TURNED TO HDG 240 DEGS DIRECT FWA. ABOUT THIS TIME THE PNF PLT DETECTED THE NAV ERROR AND DIRECTED A TURN TO A HDG OF 290 DEGS. ZOB ASKED IF WE WERE PROCEEDING TO JXN. THE ESTIMATED NAV ERROR WAS 7-8 NM SSW OF TRACK. NO CONFLICT OCCURRED WITH OTHER IFR TFC. THE CAUSAL FACTOR IN THIS NAV DEV WAS THE INAPPROPRIATE USE OF NAV MODE WITH AUTOFLT ENGAGED, GPS. TOTAL FLT TIME PLANNED LESS THAN .8 HRS. BACKING UP THE GPS USING RAW DATA, IN THIS CASE VOR TUNED, HSI, AND PROPER RMI PREVENTED A GROSS NAV ERROR. HAD THE PNF NOT BEEN BACKING UP THE GPS OR XCHKING THE ACFT HDG/POS, THE ACFT WOULD HAVE CONTINUED DIRECT FWA. ONCE AGAIN IMPROPER USE OF FMS/GPS/AUTOFLT GOT THE BEST OF THE HUMANS!
