Narrative:
We were level at 10000 ft on a heading of 090 degrees (approximately). We were told by approach control to turn to a 050 degree heading first, and then descend to 7000 ft (or 5000 ft -- this report is being submitted on sep/xa/00). The PF (the captain) initially turned to 070 degrees and then descended. He did not want to make the full turn due to a cumulo nimbus/WX buildup that we would have flown through. I pointed out to the captain that we then should not be descending and relayed to ATC immediately that we needed a different vector for WX. The heading was given for traffic initially. ATC gave us a new clearance which we were able to comply with. There was no compromise to safety according to the controllers whom the captain talked with after the flight landed at indianapolis.

Title: A DC10-30F FO ADVISES CAPT AND ATC THAT REVISED VECTORS WERE NEEDED FOR WX AVOIDANCE AND THE PREMATURE DSCNT AS INITIATED BY THE PIC NEAR VHP, IN.
Narrative: WE WERE LEVEL AT 10000 FT ON A HDG OF 090 DEGS (APPROX). WE WERE TOLD BY APCH CTL TO TURN TO A 050 DEG HDG FIRST, AND THEN DSND TO 7000 FT (OR 5000 FT -- THIS RPT IS BEING SUBMITTED ON SEP/XA/00). THE PF (THE CAPT) INITIALLY TURNED TO 070 DEGS AND THEN DSNDED. HE DID NOT WANT TO MAKE THE FULL TURN DUE TO A CUMULO NIMBUS/WX BUILDUP THAT WE WOULD HAVE FLOWN THROUGH. I POINTED OUT TO THE CAPT THAT WE THEN SHOULD NOT BE DSNDING AND RELAYED TO ATC IMMEDIATELY THAT WE NEEDED A DIFFERENT VECTOR FOR WX. THE HDG WAS GIVEN FOR TFC INITIALLY. ATC GAVE US A NEW CLRNC WHICH WE WERE ABLE TO COMPLY WITH. THERE WAS NO COMPROMISE TO SAFETY ACCORDING TO THE CTLRS WHOM THE CAPT TALKED WITH AFTER THE FLT LANDED AT INDIANAPOLIS.
