Narrative:
Despite being briefed otherwise, first officer called MD88 in sight and we were cleared for visual to follow it. Suspect he was also slam dunked like us. We hit his wake turbulence 3-4 times resulting in roll +/-2-3 degrees, light to moderate turbulence. Made a PIREP. Several passenger and flight attendants asked about this. No injuries noted. First officer didn't call traffic just once but again after I asked him not to. I blurted out 'just what about 'don't call traffic in sight are you having a problem understanding?' at gate, sought to educate him about what acceptance of that visual clearance does in atl: disregard for wake turbulence separation by ATC who still controls spacing and assumption of all responsibility by flight crew. Told him we owe our passenger more than 2 NM spacing and ride ATC is giving. Not sure it sunk in. ZTL practices will hurt, possibly kill, someone eventually as long as pilots accept or have it accepted for them. This 'follow the leader, increase capacity' is nonsense.
