Narrative:
Takeoff from runway 22 at hobby. We were given instructions by tower 'cleared for takeoff, turn left 360 degrees.' I read back instructions. First officer took off, turned right. Tower noted the incorrect turn, reissued instructions to turn left. We complied. The rest of the departure is normal. This event did not cause a problem, but could have, as there were approachs being made to runway 12R. Fault is mine. I either misread the clearance or misunderstood. Contributing factor: when we were cleared into position and hold, the normal below the line checklist began. This was interrupted by a frequency change by tower from the normal 118.7 to another frequency and check-in done by the first officer. The below the line checklist was once again commenced to be only broken by takeoff clearance, which I read back, dialing in the heading, answering the checklist callouts to completion, before turning the aircraft over to the first officer for takeoff. This was a condensed area of activity with the added confusion of a frequency change.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B737-300 FLC TURNS R AFTER DEPARTING RWY 22 WHEN THE CLRNC HAD BEEN TO TURN L AFTER TKOF AT HOU, TX.
Narrative: TKOF FROM RWY 22 AT HOBBY. WE WERE GIVEN INSTRUCTIONS BY TWR 'CLRED FOR TKOF, TURN L 360 DEGS.' I READ BACK INSTRUCTIONS. FO TOOK OFF, TURNED R. TWR NOTED THE INCORRECT TURN, REISSUED INSTRUCTIONS TO TURN L. WE COMPLIED. THE REST OF THE DEP IS NORMAL. THIS EVENT DID NOT CAUSE A PROB, BUT COULD HAVE, AS THERE WERE APCHS BEING MADE TO RWY 12R. FAULT IS MINE. I EITHER MISREAD THE CLRNC OR MISUNDERSTOOD. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR: WHEN WE WERE CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD, THE NORMAL BELOW THE LINE CHKLIST BEGAN. THIS WAS INTERRUPTED BY A FREQ CHANGE BY TWR FROM THE NORMAL 118.7 TO ANOTHER FREQ AND CHK-IN DONE BY THE FO. THE BELOW THE LINE CHKLIST WAS ONCE AGAIN COMMENCED TO BE ONLY BROKEN BY TKOF CLRNC, WHICH I READ BACK, DIALING IN THE HDG, ANSWERING THE CHKLIST CALLOUTS TO COMPLETION, BEFORE TURNING THE ACFT OVER TO THE FO FOR TKOF. THIS WAS A CONDENSED AREA OF ACTIVITY WITH THE ADDED CONFUSION OF A FREQ CHANGE.
