Narrative:

Departed IFR to acy from teb, assigned 040 degrees after departure to 1500 ft MSL then direct to beacon climb to 8000 ft. Departed and followed climb out instructions. At about 4000 ft the controller told us to stop our climb at 6000 ft due to higher traffic. I was slow in pulling the power back and arresting the climb. I reached 6600 ft before I was able to start a descent back down to 6000 ft. To avoid this from happening again the simple solution is for me to pay closer attention to my situational awareness and react quicker to a situation that always changes.
