Narrative:
Upon climbing through 10000 ft during departure from lga en route to btv, left side cockpit window cracked resulting in windshield heat failure. Completed review of pilot's quick reference handbook, declared emergency and returned to lga. Landed without further incident. Cockpit window cracks are apparently common occurrence on this aircraft. Suggest redesign of windows.
