Narrative:

Upon landing after a part 121 domestic flight from aus-elp, crew scheduling called to inform me that my first officer and flight engineer had departed aus after exceeding 8 hours flight time in a 24 hour period. Although I (captain) was legal, my first officer and flight engineer were not. There was some confusion of the first officer's and flight engineer's part since there was an intervening rest period of 12 hours 30 mins which was double the amount of flying time before the rest period. This caused the first officer and flight engineer to think that they had 'doubled out' and therefore the earlier flight time before the break was no longer being carried. I believe this could have been avoided had I, as the captain, been notified of their previous flight assignment, and if scheduling would not have scheduled us for a trip that was going to exceed to first officer's and flight engineer's time.
