Narrative:
Ferry flight from udd to lax. We received clearance and void time on ground via cell phone. Cleared as filed. After takeoff, we contacted departure who confirmed our passing altitude and then told us to maintain VFR while they worked on our clearance! I then asked for a heading and altitude. It would only take a few mins for the heading to take us into a mountain. We were then given a route that began at psp (we were past psp) and had route breaks. Frequency was congested. Another controller tried vectoring us onto our route, but we needed to have the fix spelled. Vectors took us in circles and the frequency was blocked until we were instructed to switch frequencys. Next controller instructed us to fly direct to pdz for the pdz 4 arrival. Lax ATIS was very long and we couldn't hear the landing runway. Approach frequency was congested and our queries went unanswered. Pdz 4 arrival goes south to north. Lax has 4 parallel runways going east to west. Consequently, landing runway is required for the FMS and flight planning. Crossing restrs on the newly assigned STAR were ambiguous to crew. Approach frequency was little help because of blocked xmissions.

Title: A SHORT FERRY FLT RESULTS IN MUCH CONFUSION BTWN ATC AND FLC FROM SHORTLY AFTER TKOF TO ARR AT LAS ANGELES.
Narrative: FERRY FLT FROM UDD TO LAX. WE RECEIVED CLRNC AND VOID TIME ON GND VIA CELL PHONE. CLRED AS FILED. AFTER TKOF, WE CONTACTED DEP WHO CONFIRMED OUR PASSING ALT AND THEN TOLD US TO MAINTAIN VFR WHILE THEY WORKED ON OUR CLRNC! I THEN ASKED FOR A HDG AND ALT. IT WOULD ONLY TAKE A FEW MINS FOR THE HDG TO TAKE US INTO A MOUNTAIN. WE WERE THEN GIVEN A RTE THAT BEGAN AT PSP (WE WERE PAST PSP) AND HAD RTE BREAKS. FREQ WAS CONGESTED. ANOTHER CTLR TRIED VECTORING US ONTO OUR RTE, BUT WE NEEDED TO HAVE THE FIX SPELLED. VECTORS TOOK US IN CIRCLES AND THE FREQ WAS BLOCKED UNTIL WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO SWITCH FREQS. NEXT CTLR INSTRUCTED US TO FLY DIRECT TO PDZ FOR THE PDZ 4 ARR. LAX ATIS WAS VERY LONG AND WE COULDN'T HEAR THE LNDG RWY. APCH FREQ WAS CONGESTED AND OUR QUERIES WENT UNANSWERED. PDZ 4 ARR GOES S TO N. LAX HAS 4 PARALLEL RWYS GOING E TO W. CONSEQUENTLY, LNDG RWY IS REQUIRED FOR THE FMS AND FLT PLANNING. XING RESTRS ON THE NEWLY ASSIGNED STAR WERE AMBIGUOUS TO CREW. APCH FREQ WAS LITTLE HELP BECAUSE OF BLOCKED XMISSIONS.
