Narrative:
SID called for right or left turn after takeoff. Clearance was given for left turn after takeoff to intermediate altitude on runway 8. Engine out departure called for right turn and we were expecting a right turn. I confirmed with copilot that the instructions were for a right turn when jump seater (check airman) challenged us on departure instructions. Did not verify with ATC. Halfway through turn out ATC informed we had been given a left turn out. No traffic or terrain conflicts. We just misunderstood instructions. 'We heard what we were programmed to hear' supplemental information from acn 491162: ATC gave a left turn to 310 degrees after takeoff on runway 8 (abq). We heard right turn and made a right turn after takeoff. At 170 degree heading ATC notified us of the error and gave us a 170 degree heading and climb out. No near misses, conflicts, or terrain avoidance maneuvers needed. There was no problems with traffic created by our error. Factors: long and fast clearance readback by ATC. We read back clearance with incorrect direction and was not corrected. So check airmen onboard questioned readback but captain and first officer were positive of right turn clearance being correct. So (myself) did not hear the clearance and assumed that the captain and first officer were correct. I should have insisted on a clarification with ATC.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B727 CREW HAD TRACK DEV IN ABQ CLASS C.
Narrative: SID CALLED FOR R OR L TURN AFTER TKOF. CLRNC WAS GIVEN FOR L TURN AFTER TKOF TO INTERMEDIATE ALT ON RWY 8. ENG OUT DEP CALLED FOR R TURN AND WE WERE EXPECTING A R TURN. I CONFIRMED WITH COPLT THAT THE INSTRUCTIONS WERE FOR A R TURN WHEN JUMP SEATER (CHK AIRMAN) CHALLENGED US ON DEP INSTRUCTIONS. DID NOT VERIFY WITH ATC. HALFWAY THROUGH TURN OUT ATC INFORMED WE HAD BEEN GIVEN A L TURN OUT. NO TFC OR TERRAIN CONFLICTS. WE JUST MISUNDERSTOOD INSTRUCTIONS. 'WE HEARD WHAT WE WERE PROGRAMMED TO HEAR' SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 491162: ATC GAVE A L TURN TO 310 DEGS AFTER TKOF ON RWY 8 (ABQ). WE HEARD R TURN AND MADE A R TURN AFTER TKOF. AT 170 DEG HDG ATC NOTIFIED US OF THE ERROR AND GAVE US A 170 DEG HDG AND CLBOUT. NO NEAR MISSES, CONFLICTS, OR TERRAIN AVOIDANCE MANEUVERS NEEDED. THERE WAS NO PROBS WITH TFC CREATED BY OUR ERROR. FACTORS: LONG AND FAST CLRNC READBACK BY ATC. WE READ BACK CLRNC WITH INCORRECT DIRECTION AND WAS NOT CORRECTED. SO CHK AIRMEN ONBOARD QUESTIONED READBACK BUT CAPT AND FO WERE POSITIVE OF R TURN CLRNC BEING CORRECT. SO (MYSELF) DID NOT HEAR THE CLRNC AND ASSUMED THAT THE CAPT AND FO WERE CORRECT. I SHOULD HAVE INSISTED ON A CLARIFICATION WITH ATC.
