Narrative:
Upon initial contact with ground control, was advised to taxi to runway 22L via taxiway D. After switching to tower at location D6/D7, we were cleared for takeoff on runway 22L. During power advancement for takeoff, tower asked, 'air carrier X, what are you doing?' I responded, 'air carrier X rolling runway 22L.' subsequently, another aircraft landing runway 27L executed a go around, as directed by tower. Because takeoff clearance was issued well before we were at departure end of runway 22L, controller may have underestimated additional taxi time involved before able to commence takeoff. We were not cleared for 'immediate takeoff,' nor told 'cleared for takeoff, no delay,' nor advised of any landing traffic. Takeoff and handoff to departure control was normal.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD80 CREW WAS ISSUED TKOF CLRNC IN FRONT OF A LNDG ACFT AT ORD.
Narrative: UPON INITIAL CONTACT WITH GND CTL, WAS ADVISED TO TAXI TO RWY 22L VIA TXWY D. AFTER SWITCHING TO TWR AT LOCATION D6/D7, WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF ON RWY 22L. DURING PWR ADVANCEMENT FOR TKOF, TWR ASKED, 'ACR X, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?' I RESPONDED, 'ACR X ROLLING RWY 22L.' SUBSEQUENTLY, ANOTHER ACFT LNDG RWY 27L EXECUTED A GAR, AS DIRECTED BY TWR. BECAUSE TKOF CLRNC WAS ISSUED WELL BEFORE WE WERE AT DEP END OF RWY 22L, CTLR MAY HAVE UNDERESTIMATED ADDITIONAL TAXI TIME INVOLVED BEFORE ABLE TO COMMENCE TKOF. WE WERE NOT CLRED FOR 'IMMEDIATE TKOF,' NOR TOLD 'CLRED FOR TKOF, NO DELAY,' NOR ADVISED OF ANY LNDG TFC. TKOF AND HDOF TO DEP CTL WAS NORMAL.
