Narrative:
Takeoff roll started on runway 22R from intx west. Normal takeoff started from stop position and power applied per aircraft flight manual. Aircraft on centerline. Approach intx Y at appox 80 KTS. Two harsh jolts were encountered as the nose gear and main gear crossed this intx Y. The remainder of takeoff roll and flight were normal. One exception was when flight attendant seated on aft jump seat called. One complained of sore neck and other of sore back. Both said were caused by jolts encountered on takeoff neither flight attendant wanted to seek medical attention during course of flight or at end of flight. First officer and I have encountered this runway to be rough in the past, but never like this. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: crew was flying a B737-500 aircraft. He reports that there appears to have been some construction which caused a raised area not flush with the adjacent runway. The aircraft struts bottomed when the area was hit at about 80 KTS. Two flight attendant in the rear jump seat reported injuries. The captain departed this runway yesterday and reported nothing had been fixed.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-500 CREW HIT A ROUGH RAISED AREA OF RWY 22R AT INTXN Y AT EWR.
Narrative: TKOF ROLL STARTED ON RWY 22R FROM INTX W. NORMAL TKOF STARTED FROM STOP POS AND PWR APPLIED PER ACFT FLT MANUAL. ACFT ON CENTERLINE. APCH INTX Y AT APPOX 80 KTS. TWO HARSH JOLTS WERE ENCOUNTERED AS THE NOSE GEAR AND MAIN GEAR CROSSED THIS INTX Y. THE REMAINDER OF TKOF ROLL AND FLT WERE NORMAL. ONE EXCEPTION WAS WHEN FA SEATED ON AFT JUMP SEAT CALLED. ONE COMPLAINED OF SORE NECK AND OTHER OF SORE BACK. BOTH SAID WERE CAUSED BY JOLTS ENCOUNTERED ON TKOF NEITHER FA WANTED TO SEEK MEDICAL ATTN DURING COURSE OF FLT OR AT END OF FLT. FO AND I HAVE ENCOUNTERED THIS RWY TO BE ROUGH IN THE PAST, BUT NEVER LIKE THIS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: CREW WAS FLYING A B737-500 ACFT. HE RPTS THAT THERE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN SOME CONSTRUCTION WHICH CAUSED A RAISED AREA NOT FLUSH WITH THE ADJACENT RWY. THE ACFT STRUTS BOTTOMED WHEN THE AREA WAS HIT AT ABOUT 80 KTS. TWO FA IN THE REAR JUMP SEAT RPTED INJURIES. THE CAPT DEPARTED THIS RWY YESTERDAY AND RPTED NOTHING HAD BEEN FIXED.
