Narrative:
On jul/mon/01 approximately XA15, captain and myself were flying flight to ewr on the arrival. Approaching pxt, we were given step-down altitudes due to PIREPS of turbulence. This was toward the end of a long day with minimal ground time between legs to eat and so forth. Near pxt, flight attendants came into cockpit with crew meal and drinks during these step-down commands from ATC. Finally, ATC requested to descend and maintain 11000 ft which I read back and both pilots backed up with the altitude in altitude window on the MCP. Captain started a 1000 FPM descent using vertical speed control on the MCP. Approximately 5-8 mi inside (north of) holey, ATC questioned us if we had been given the restr of holey at 11000 ft. I responded that 'I don't think so,' that I thought clearance was for descend and maintain 11000 ft. ATC responded by saying they would send the tapes to our company for verification and to now descend to cross rbv at 8000 ft, which we complied with. Landing was made on runway 4R without any other problem.

Title: ALT UNDERSHOT AND ALT XING RESTR MISSED BY A DSNDING B737-500 AT HOLEY INTXN, NJ.
Narrative: ON JUL/MON/01 APPROX XA15, CAPT AND MYSELF WERE FLYING FLT TO EWR ON THE ARR. APCHING PXT, WE WERE GIVEN STEP-DOWN ALTS DUE TO PIREPS OF TURB. THIS WAS TOWARD THE END OF A LONG DAY WITH MINIMAL GND TIME BTWN LEGS TO EAT AND SO FORTH. NEAR PXT, FLT ATTENDANTS CAME INTO COCKPIT WITH CREW MEAL AND DRINKS DURING THESE STEP-DOWN COMMANDS FROM ATC. FINALLY, ATC REQUESTED TO DSND AND MAINTAIN 11000 FT WHICH I READ BACK AND BOTH PLTS BACKED UP WITH THE ALT IN ALT WINDOW ON THE MCP. CAPT STARTED A 1000 FPM DSCNT USING VERT SPD CTL ON THE MCP. APPROX 5-8 MI INSIDE (N OF) HOLEY, ATC QUESTIONED US IF WE HAD BEEN GIVEN THE RESTR OF HOLEY AT 11000 FT. I RESPONDED THAT 'I DON'T THINK SO,' THAT I THOUGHT CLRNC WAS FOR DSND AND MAINTAIN 11000 FT. ATC RESPONDED BY SAYING THEY WOULD SEND THE TAPES TO OUR COMPANY FOR VERIFICATION AND TO NOW DSND TO CROSS RBV AT 8000 FT, WHICH WE COMPLIED WITH. LNDG WAS MADE ON RWY 4R WITHOUT ANY OTHER PROB.
