Narrative:
Once I took off from huntsville (to go for commercial training at company X), I realized that visibility was greatly obscured due to a very thick haze. Shortly, after takeoff I called ZHU to get VFR following. Because the visibility was still VFR, but marginal, the controller told me to contact hooks 118.40, so I called up and received no answer. Next time I tried another frequency, and still no response. A week before I had come in before XA00 am and the tower was not open yet. Upon, mistakenly switching my times, from before XB00 to it actually being open at XA00 am. So, thinking the tower was closed I proceeded to make a landing as it was uncontrolled, following the localizer to the airport (not doing an approach just using as a direct guide) announcing my intentions, and altitude at 12 mi, 8 mi, 6 mi, and once on final. I also landed runway 17R instead of what the ATIS advised, due to the fact that at an uncontrolled field, it is pilot's discretion and since the winds were calm and I was on a straight in landing for runway 17, I chose to land runway 17R. Once I touched, I noticed the traffic taxiing off the runway. I thought then that they had jut landed ahead of me. But I was still wondering why I hadn't heard their intentions. I landed, taxied off, cleaned up the plane and then tried to switch the radio. Once I switched the frequency to the top radio, I gained communication. So I was not aware of the radio failure at the time. I just mistakenly got my times mixed up. Luckily it wasn't anything that harmed someone else.

Title: C177 PLT HAD COM PROBS ESTABLISHING CONTACT WITH DWH ATCT. HE THOUGHT THE TWR WAS CLOSED SO HE JUST LANDED AT DWH.
Narrative: ONCE I TOOK OFF FROM HUNTSVILLE (TO GO FOR COMMERCIAL TRAINING AT COMPANY X), I REALIZED THAT VISIBILITY WAS GREATLY OBSCURED DUE TO A VERY THICK HAZE. SHORTLY, AFTER TKOF I CALLED ZHU TO GET VFR FOLLOWING. BECAUSE THE VISIBILITY WAS STILL VFR, BUT MARGINAL, THE CTLR TOLD ME TO CONTACT HOOKS 118.40, SO I CALLED UP AND RECEIVED NO ANSWER. NEXT TIME I TRIED ANOTHER FREQ, AND STILL NO RESPONSE. A WEEK BEFORE I HAD COME IN BEFORE XA00 AM AND THE TWR WAS NOT OPEN YET. UPON, MISTAKENLY SWITCHING MY TIMES, FROM BEFORE XB00 TO IT ACTUALLY BEING OPEN AT XA00 AM. SO, THINKING THE TWR WAS CLOSED I PROCEEDED TO MAKE A LNDG AS IT WAS UNCTLED, FOLLOWING THE LOC TO THE ARPT (NOT DOING AN APCH JUST USING AS A DIRECT GUIDE) ANNOUNCING MY INTENTIONS, AND ALT AT 12 MI, 8 MI, 6 MI, AND ONCE ON FINAL. I ALSO LANDED RWY 17R INSTEAD OF WHAT THE ATIS ADVISED, DUE TO THE FACT THAT AT AN UNCTLED FIELD, IT IS PLT'S DISCRETION AND SINCE THE WINDS WERE CALM AND I WAS ON A STRAIGHT IN LNDG FOR RWY 17, I CHOSE TO LAND RWY 17R. ONCE I TOUCHED, I NOTICED THE TFC TAXIING OFF THE RWY. I THOUGHT THEN THAT THEY HAD JUT LANDED AHEAD OF ME. BUT I WAS STILL WONDERING WHY I HADN'T HEARD THEIR INTENTIONS. I LANDED, TAXIED OFF, CLEANED UP THE PLANE AND THEN TRIED TO SWITCH THE RADIO. ONCE I SWITCHED THE FREQ TO THE TOP RADIO, I GAINED COM. SO I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE RADIO FAILURE AT THE TIME. I JUST MISTAKENLY GOT MY TIMES MIXED UP. LUCKILY IT WASN'T ANYTHING THAT HARMED SOMEONE ELSE.
