Narrative:
We were departing on the gateway 4 departure out of stl. The SID has 2 rtes, a radial off the st louis VOR and one off the csx VOR. Both lead to twila intersection and the remainder of the SID. We departed on runway 30 and were given radar vectors to an easterly heading and told to intercept the radial. We intercepted the radial off the csx VOR. The controller wanted us to intercept the radial out of the stl VOR. The course we took put us approximately 5 mi south of the stl radial. The controller asked if we missed the radial and gave us direct to twila intersection. No conflicts arose. The captain thought the controller said to intercept the stl radial and I think he just said intercept the radial. The FMC defaults to csx so that is what was in the FMC. This event didn't cause any problems, but I have heard of this happening in the past.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B752 CREW, ON DEP, INTERCEPTED WRONG RADIAL.
Narrative: WE WERE DEPARTING ON THE GATEWAY 4 DEP OUT OF STL. THE SID HAS 2 RTES, A RADIAL OFF THE ST LOUIS VOR AND ONE OFF THE CSX VOR. BOTH LEAD TO TWILA INTXN AND THE REMAINDER OF THE SID. WE DEPARTED ON RWY 30 AND WERE GIVEN RADAR VECTORS TO AN EASTERLY HDG AND TOLD TO INTERCEPT THE RADIAL. WE INTERCEPTED THE RADIAL OFF THE CSX VOR. THE CTLR WANTED US TO INTERCEPT THE RADIAL OUT OF THE STL VOR. THE COURSE WE TOOK PUT US APPROX 5 MI S OF THE STL RADIAL. THE CTLR ASKED IF WE MISSED THE RADIAL AND GAVE US DIRECT TO TWILA INTXN. NO CONFLICTS AROSE. THE CAPT THOUGHT THE CTLR SAID TO INTERCEPT THE STL RADIAL AND I THINK HE JUST SAID INTERCEPT THE RADIAL. THE FMC DEFAULTS TO CSX SO THAT IS WHAT WAS IN THE FMC. THIS EVENT DIDN'T CAUSE ANY PROBS, BUT I HAVE HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING IN THE PAST.
