Narrative:
Taking off on runway 9R, we were cleared for an immediate left turn north for departure to fxe. During the turn north, an MD80 that we were not advised about filled our windscreen. We would not have hit it at its climb attitude, but would have flown right into its wake. I then turned east to parallel them so as to not fly through their wake. The other aircraft also queried ATC about us and said we were no factor. We verified we were cleared for the north turn after takeoff and controller said yes. After the jet cleared, we proceeded on course. After landing, I called fll tower and talked to supervisor. Supervisor said he was standing next to the controller at all times and there was no problem. I personally think we should have been told of the other aircraft and either waited or not turned so early.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SWIII FLC INITIATES EVASIVE MANEUVER FROM AN MD80 WHEN DEPARTING FLL. INCIDENT REVIEWED WITH FLL.
Narrative: TAKING OFF ON RWY 9R, WE WERE CLRED FOR AN IMMEDIATE L TURN N FOR DEP TO FXE. DURING THE TURN N, AN MD80 THAT WE WERE NOT ADVISED ABOUT FILLED OUR WINDSCREEN. WE WOULD NOT HAVE HIT IT AT ITS CLB ATTITUDE, BUT WOULD HAVE FLOWN RIGHT INTO ITS WAKE. I THEN TURNED E TO PARALLEL THEM SO AS TO NOT FLY THROUGH THEIR WAKE. THE OTHER ACFT ALSO QUERIED ATC ABOUT US AND SAID WE WERE NO FACTOR. WE VERIFIED WE WERE CLRED FOR THE N TURN AFTER TKOF AND CTLR SAID YES. AFTER THE JET CLRED, WE PROCEEDED ON COURSE. AFTER LNDG, I CALLED FLL TWR AND TALKED TO SUPVR. SUPVR SAID HE WAS STANDING NEXT TO THE CTLR AT ALL TIMES AND THERE WAS NO PROB. I PERSONALLY THINK WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD OF THE OTHER ACFT AND EITHER WAITED OR NOT TURNED SO EARLY.
