Narrative:
After touchdown in yak, reverse thrust was applied. Smoke immediately filled flight deck and passenger cabin. After stowing reverse, I had the first officer turn off packs and open outflow valve. I also unlocked flight deck door and had the 'a' flight attendant open door to evaluate passenger cabin smoke. Smoke in flight deck cleared out while some remained in cabin, but not getting worse. Called for fire equipment. Passenger deplaned through L1 door using stairs quickly. Air carrier mechanic found large amounts of urea pellets used for runway deice around brakes and inside engine cowling. Cause of smoke was from ingestion of urea pellets in engine. I have informed company to talk to yak airport personnel about this problem and cause of smoke so they can adjust their amounts of application of urea pellets to the runway.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-400 CREW HAD SMOKE IN COCKPIT AND CABIN AFTER LNDG AT YAK.
Narrative: AFTER TOUCHDOWN IN YAK, REVERSE THRUST WAS APPLIED. SMOKE IMMEDIATELY FILLED FLT DECK AND PAX CABIN. AFTER STOWING REVERSE, I HAD THE FO TURN OFF PACKS AND OPEN OUTFLOW VALVE. I ALSO UNLOCKED FLT DECK DOOR AND HAD THE 'A' FLT ATTENDANT OPEN DOOR TO EVALUATE PAX CABIN SMOKE. SMOKE IN FLT DECK CLRED OUT WHILE SOME REMAINED IN CABIN, BUT NOT GETTING WORSE. CALLED FOR FIRE EQUIP. PAX DEPLANED THROUGH L1 DOOR USING STAIRS QUICKLY. ACR MECH FOUND LARGE AMOUNTS OF UREA PELLETS USED FOR RWY DEICE AROUND BRAKES AND INSIDE ENG COWLING. CAUSE OF SMOKE WAS FROM INGESTION OF UREA PELLETS IN ENG. I HAVE INFORMED COMPANY TO TALK TO YAK ARPT PERSONNEL ABOUT THIS PROB AND CAUSE OF SMOKE SO THEY CAN ADJUST THEIR AMOUNTS OF APPLICATION OF UREA PELLETS TO THE RWY.
