Narrative:
We had returned to ZZZ because of a malfunctioning CSD that would not disconnect per QRH. Maintenance MEL'ed the CSD. The mechanic stated that the CSD was disconnected upon examination and could not be reconnected. He intimated that there might be some 'residual readings' but that the unit was separated from the engine. Again we departed for msy. In-flight, the temperature and voltage were still not in conformance with the QRH. Oil temperatures (rise and outlet) were extremely high and voltage varied as high as 75 volts. I called our dispatcher on the radio and asked for maintenance. I was asked to wait while the mechanic 'finished an MEL.' we shouldn't have had to wait. When I described the situation, the mechanic assured me that the line mechanic had indeed 'disconnected' the CSD and that we were experiencing erroneous readings. Shortly after this conversation, the temperature returned to normal, the voltage dropped off the scale, and we continued to msy uneventfully.

Title: AN MD82 CREW RPTS FAILURE OF THE CSD GENERATOR DRIVE TO DISCONNECT AFTER MAINT DEFERS THE UNIT PER THE MEL AS INOP AND DISCONNECTED.
Narrative: WE HAD RETURNED TO ZZZ BECAUSE OF A MALFUNCTIONING CSD THAT WOULD NOT DISCONNECT PER QRH. MAINT MEL'ED THE CSD. THE MECH STATED THAT THE CSD WAS DISCONNECTED UPON EXAMINATION AND COULD NOT BE RECONNECTED. HE INTIMATED THAT THERE MIGHT BE SOME 'RESIDUAL READINGS' BUT THAT THE UNIT WAS SEPARATED FROM THE ENG. AGAIN WE DEPARTED FOR MSY. INFLT, THE TEMP AND VOLTAGE WERE STILL NOT IN CONFORMANCE WITH THE QRH. OIL TEMPS (RISE AND OUTLET) WERE EXTREMELY HIGH AND VOLTAGE VARIED AS HIGH AS 75 VOLTS. I CALLED OUR DISPATCHER ON THE RADIO AND ASKED FOR MAINT. I WAS ASKED TO WAIT WHILE THE MECH 'FINISHED AN MEL.' WE SHOULDN'T HAVE HAD TO WAIT. WHEN I DESCRIBED THE SIT, THE MECH ASSURED ME THAT THE LINE MECH HAD INDEED 'DISCONNECTED' THE CSD AND THAT WE WERE EXPERIENCING ERRONEOUS READINGS. SHORTLY AFTER THIS CONVERSATION, THE TEMP RETURNED TO NORMAL, THE VOLTAGE DROPPED OFF THE SCALE, AND WE CONTINUED TO MSY UNEVENTFULLY.
