Narrative:
After landing on runway 8 at iah, I was unable to clear the runway at taxiway nk. I was instructed by tower 'if unable to clear at next taxiway, expedite to taxiway nn.' this was confusing, as I thought the next taxiway was taxiway nl. I cleared at the reverse high speed. In my mind the 'next' taxiway was taxiway nl. My speed was slow enough so I exited. At iah, using the reverse high speed is prohibited. I felt the quick last second directions by ATC were confusing at best. I was also trying to clear the runway as quickly as possibly because of traffic on short final. A caution note on chart 20-9 for iah is the only reference to reverse high speed turnoffs. It is not on the ATIS. While I did miss the caution note, ATC instructions were confusing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CARJ CREW CLRED RWY VIA A REVERSE HIGH SPD TURNOFF, WHICH WAS PROHIBITED.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG ON RWY 8 AT IAH, I WAS UNABLE TO CLR THE RWY AT TXWY NK. I WAS INSTRUCTED BY TWR 'IF UNABLE TO CLR AT NEXT TXWY, EXPEDITE TO TXWY NN.' THIS WAS CONFUSING, AS I THOUGHT THE NEXT TXWY WAS TXWY NL. I CLRED AT THE REVERSE HIGH SPD. IN MY MIND THE 'NEXT' TXWY WAS TXWY NL. MY SPD WAS SLOW ENOUGH SO I EXITED. AT IAH, USING THE REVERSE HIGH SPD IS PROHIBITED. I FELT THE QUICK LAST SECOND DIRECTIONS BY ATC WERE CONFUSING AT BEST. I WAS ALSO TRYING TO CLR THE RWY AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLY BECAUSE OF TFC ON SHORT FINAL. A CAUTION NOTE ON CHART 20-9 FOR IAH IS THE ONLY REF TO REVERSE HIGH SPD TURNOFFS. IT IS NOT ON THE ATIS. WHILE I DID MISS THE CAUTION NOTE, ATC INSTRUCTIONS WERE CONFUSING.
