Narrative:
I was in a close-in turn hand flying the airplane and my concentration was not on the radio calls from approach. This was my first trip with this copilot. I should have reaffirmed as to whether or not we were in fact cleared for the approach. Although it was a tight turn to intercept and I was busy, I should have checked we were to descend and maintain 4600 ft. Approach turned us on an intercept heading close in. We intercepted the localizer at the 11 DME. I asked my copilot if I could descend and to what altitude. He replied that we could go to 3600 ft. I started to descend and at 4300 ft the controller reminded us that although we were on the localizer we had not been cleared for the approach, whereupon he cleared us for the approach.

Title: A CPR PIC LEAVES HIS ASSIGNED ALT PREMATURELY DURING THE LOC INTERCEPT FOR AN LDA RWY 12L APCH INTO STL, MO.
Narrative: I WAS IN A CLOSE-IN TURN HAND FLYING THE AIRPLANE AND MY CONCENTRATION WAS NOT ON THE RADIO CALLS FROM APCH. THIS WAS MY FIRST TRIP WITH THIS COPLT. I SHOULD HAVE REAFFIRMED AS TO WHETHER OR NOT WE WERE IN FACT CLRED FOR THE APCH. ALTHOUGH IT WAS A TIGHT TURN TO INTERCEPT AND I WAS BUSY, I SHOULD HAVE CHKED WE WERE TO DSND AND MAINTAIN 4600 FT. APCH TURNED US ON AN INTERCEPT HDG CLOSE IN. WE INTERCEPTED THE LOC AT THE 11 DME. I ASKED MY COPLT IF I COULD DSND AND TO WHAT ALT. HE REPLIED THAT WE COULD GO TO 3600 FT. I STARTED TO DSND AND AT 4300 FT THE CTLR REMINDED US THAT ALTHOUGH WE WERE ON THE LOC WE HAD NOT BEEN CLRED FOR THE APCH, WHEREUPON HE CLRED US FOR THE APCH.
